March 29, 2006

A China Mobile subsidiary has signed France's Alcatel to take part in an expansion of wireless service in seven Chinese cities.

Shanxi Mobile will be using Alcatel's Evolium GSM/EDGE solutions for upgrades in seven cities in Shanxi province that will extend service to another 3 million subscribers.

The contract, along with a second deal for spare parts, is worth 24 million Euros ($28.8 million) to Alcatel and is the 11th contract for GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) network expansion entered into with Shanxi Mobile since 1996.
