Intel designs rugged PC for rural India

Intel is introducing a new personal computer designed to meet the demands of India's often-rugged countryside.

The Community PC is designed for use in community kiosks and will function as the primary Internet portal of entire villages.

Wednesday's debut of the Community PC was accompanied by the launch of Intel's Jagruti (Awakening) initiative to bring the Internet to rural Indian villages where connectivity has lagged despite the country's overall technology boom.

To that end, the Community PC will allow multiple users to access the Internet and stand up to the rigorous environment of the region.

Community PC is housed in a reinforced chassis with removable air filters that help keep the motherboard functioning. The low power consumption includes an uninterrupted power supply to keep the machine running in the event of a power outage.
