Indosat trials GSM/CDMA messaging
April 3, 2006Indosat said Monday it had launched a trial of the world's first voice SMS service that will work on both GMS and CDMA wireless networks.
The project merges SMS (short message service) functions on Indosat's StarOne CDMA network with a GSM messaging solution from U.S. system developer Kirusa to enable subscribers to exchange messages regardless of whether they are on GSM or CDMA.
"With Kirusa, we are able to send voice SMS not only to CDMA but also to GSM subscribers even though the system has not yet been installed within our GSM network," Indosat Vice President Saiful Rizal said in a news release.
Indosat is the second-largest wireless provider in Indonesia and expects to have about 20 million subscribers by the end of the year.
