Briefs: Chunghwa updates international switching

April 4, 2006

Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom is moving its international circuit-switched infrastructure to a Voice over Internet Protocol next-generation network.

Initial deployment of the Nortel-built system will be completed by the third quarter in Taipei, Kaoshiung and three overseas locations.

Once up and running the new capabilities will let Chunghwa, Taiwan's largest telecom operator, offer customers advanced voice, data and SIP-based multimedia. It will also set the stage for the addition of an IP Multimedia Subsystem.

"Nortel is the sole provider of VoIP NGN solutions across Chunghwa Telecom's northern, central and southern region branches and we are now bringing these same IP-based, converged network capabilities to its International Business Group," Jackson Wu, managing director of Nortel in Taiwan, said Tuesday in a news release.
