ADAPTIX to test mobile WiMax in New York
September 9, 2005ADAPTIX will conduct testing in New York City next year of a mobile and fixed WiMax system offering service for multiple high-speed applications.
The trials will commence early next year in Manhattan in conjunction with NY3G, one of the two broadband radio service spectrum licensees in the city.
"As the largest market in the U.S., New York City offers the opportunity for ADAPTIX and NY3G to show the robustness of the OFDMA/TDD platform in a challenging environment for any wireless technology," said Vern Fotheringham, CEO of ADAPTIX.
Fotheringham said in a release Thursday that the system will allow a wide range of functions from both fixed and mobile locations, including large movie downloads, VoIP and data transfers.
The system was demonstrated initially in July at the WiMax Forum. It was installed in a GMC Yukon, a large sport utility vehicle similar to those used by emergency services agencies.
Based on the 802.16e wireless standard, the ADAPTIX was able to provide 2.5 megabits per second of throughput as the Yukon traveled at normal speeds.
