Proposed Nantucket wind farm in jeopardy
April 8, 2006A tentative U.S. Senate agreement could give Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney the final say on the wind farm project proposed for Nantucket Sound.
Romney, an opponent of the Cape Wind Associates project, has been limited in his ability to block it, since it would be located in federal waters where the state lacks jurisdiction, the Boston Globe said.
The amendment that would grant Romney or his successor the right to block the project is expected to be attached to a broad Coast Guard authorization bill that would face floor votes in the House and the Senate, where its future remains unclear.
Cape Wind Associates wants to build 130 wind turbines on a 24-square-mile area of Nantucket Sound to generate electricity.
Some residents of Cape Cod and local islands have balked at the idea of wind turbines towering as tall as the Statue of Liberty on the horizon.
