GigaBeam wireless links used in NYC net
April 17, 2006A Telkonet subsidiary has purchased five wireless fiber links from GigaBeam that will provide "quadruple play" broadband service in New York City.
The WiFiber purchase by Telkonet's Microwave Satellite Technologies (MST) will be used in the installation of what will be the world's first 70-80 Gigahertz ultra high-speed resilient loop network in the Big Apple, which will provide quadruple-play standard Internet access, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephony, Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) and WiFi access.
The 70-80 Ghz bands are on the spectrum authorized for commercial point-to-point wireless. By using large blocks of that spectrum through its wireless fiber links, GigaBeam can offer 1 gigabit-per-second speeds.
The GigaBeam will be used to connect various buildings in Manhattan to the service wirelessly without the need to physically run fiber-optic cables into them.
"This deployment is expected to be the first of many deployments in New York City and other cities across the country," MST President Frank Matarazzo said Monday in a news release. "WiFiber enables new applications like IPTV because it has the capacity of fiber but at a much more attractive price."
