In Brief: PSAT-8 TV satellite focuses on SW Pacific

April 18, 2006

PanAmSat has enhanced its satellite television coverage of the southwest Pacific by shifting a beam on its PAS-8 spacecraft.

The Australian operator carries major broadcasters such as ABS-CBN, Turner Broadcasting and NHK, and will now cover all of New Zealand as well as Fiji and New Caledonia.

"Broadcast television, VSAT services, broadband, emergency response, disaster recovery and satellite news gathering will all be available through the satellite's footprint," said PanAmSat Vice President David Ball. "And for the many multi-cultural viewers in these countries, we will be able to deliver a wide array of ethnic programming through our PanGlobal TV DTH platform."

The ground crew moved the Ku-band from Southeast Asia to the southwest Pacific and commenced service last Sunday.
