Verizon offers global EV-DO broadband

September 15th, 2005

Verizon Wireless Thursday debuted a wireless broadband system with worldwide reach.

GlobalAccess allows subscribers to tap into Verizon's EV-DO network and provides download speeds of 400-700 kilobits per second in much of the United States and Canada as well as 50 countries around the world.

"Many of our enterprise customers have large numbers of employees who spend time traveling internationally," Verizon Vice President Cindy Patterson said in commenting on the potential business market for GlobalAccess.

GlobalAccess gets its punch from Vodafone's 3G high-speed network and contains two EV-DO cards. Subscriptions cost $129 per month for access in Verizon's Tier 1 countries of Western Europe. Access in Tier 2 nations, including Russia, China and Brazil, is billed at 3 cents per kilobit. Pay-as-you-go plans are also available.
