Largest U.S. university VoIP advances

April 26, 2006

Boise State University has completed installation of what will be the largest college Voice over Internet Protocol system in the United States.

Time Warner Telecom said Wednesday it had delivered IP trunk connections that link up with the university's PBX and will serve more than 14,000 phone numbers and 4,000 handsets.

"We'll be able to save about half the cost of what we paid previously through significantly reduced network administration, retirement of gateway devices and essentially free long-distance calling between Time Warner Telecom nodes," said Brian McDevitt, manager of telephone network services for Boise State.

Time Warner Telecom's 20 megabit per second trunk boosts Boise State's broadband capability by 20 percent over the current T1 equipment. The school will also be able to retire six current gateways.
