In Brief: Toshiba picks Silicon Image chip for HD PC

April 27, 2006

Toshiba has selected a transmitter chip from Silicon Image for an upcoming laptop that will play high-definition DVDs.

Toshiba's Qosmio G30/697HS will be the first notebook PC with HD-DVD capabilities and will be introduced next month.

HD-DVD and Blu-ray are the two competing next-generation formats for high-def DVD viewing; HD laptops can be used to play high-def disks on HD televisions that have display resolutions of 1920x1080 pixels.

The laptop contains a High-Definition Multimedia Interface that is encoded with the Silicon Image's Sil 1930 chip.
