In Brief: Free Ireland VoIP plan withdrawn

May 1, 2006

A promotional offering by Ireland's Smart Telecom of free Voice over Internet Protocol calls has been withdrawn due to excessive interest.

The Sunday Business Post said Smart Telecom was bombarded by multiple applications from individuals using different names seeking to bank the company's offer of free calls up to an hour.

Other than the alleged freeloading, the offer for the Smart 076 service was considered a big success. In particular, the deal attracted Irish ex-pats abroad who could establish a phone number in Ireland that friends and family could use to call them without having to pay international rates.
