In Brief: Cingular prepared for hurricane season

May 4, 2006

Cingular Wireless said it is better prepared than ever for the upcoming hurricane season.

The company said its regional network operations center based in Atlanta will monitor and maintain networks around the clock. Cingular said it has added 1,200 permanent and portable generators, bringing the total number to over 4,500.

It also said it has established more than 50 self-contained mobile cell sites that can be towed or driven into an area to provide extra call capacity or to restore communications following a disaster.

The company also pointed out that text messages will often go through quicker than voice calls during an emergency situation.
