Qualcomm, Microsoft team on wireless chips
May 5, 2006Qualcomm is teaming up with Microsoft on the creation of a chipset that will speed the development of Windows Mobile cell phones.
The two U.S. tech giants announced late Thursday that the collaboration would lead to the porting of the Microsoft Windows Mobile operating system to the Qualcomm Mobile Station Modem chipset, which will in turn lead to a new line of wireless phones equipped with familiar Windows.
"Having support for Windows Mobile on QUALCOMM's MSM chipsets will bring a familiar software experience to the next generation of phones with more appealing form factors," said Qualcomm's Sanjay K. Jha.
San Diego-based Qualcomm said the project would also provide longer battery life to allow consumers to run the new business and entertainment applications they will be able to access.
The strategy is to integrate Windows Mobile into Qualcomm's Convergence Platform 7XXX-series of chipsets, which feature dual-core architecture, an ARM11 applications processor and ARM9 modem processor.
