In Brief: Intel to unveil Core 2 Duo PC chips

Intel is unveiling its Core 2 Duo chips for laptops and desktop personal computers Monday.

The line is formally known as Conroe and Merom and reportedly gives Intel a multimedia processor that uses less power and produces less heat than the Pentium 4 processor.

The increased efficiency will allow designers to cram more circuitry into standard-sized computer frames and will eventually render the familiar Pentium 4 obsolete.

Tech media reports Sunday listed the specs at 4 megabytes with 128-bit SSE units and macro-op fusion.
