AMD unveils 64-bit dual-core processor

May 17, 2006 AMD

Advanced Micro Devices Wednesday unveiled the first line of 64-bit dual-core processors designed for notebook computers.

AMD announced in Silicon Valley that its Turion 64 X2 would provide laptop users with extended battery life and accommodate Microsoft's upcoming 64-bit version of Windows Vista.

"AMD is first to market with the only 64-bit dual-core mobile processor, driving the wave of next-generation mobile platforms that are ready today to run the 64-bit version of Windows Vista," said AMD Vice President Chris Cloran.

The first laptops carrying the new processors are expected to be shipped from a number of computer manufacturers later this quarter.

The Turion 64 X2 is based on the same Direct Connect Architecture featured in AMD's Opteron and Athlon 64 X2 processors. The advanced features include multi-core power management, AMD Digital Media Xpress for accelerated image processing and encoding, and AMD Virtualization for virtualized environments.
