In Brief: BT names first 6 'Wireless City' locations

Britain's BT announced agreements Wednesday with the first six of its "Wireless City" communities that will soon offer completed wireless Internet access.

Birmingham, Edinburgh, Leeds, Liverpool, Cardiff and Westminster were announced as the first of what will eventually be a dozen wireless cities where the Net can be accessed from just about any location.

"The Wireless City initiatives offer wide area wireless broadband access across metropolitan areas, enabling people to use the network on a range of devices ... such as e-mail, video and voice calls, even when they're on the move," said BT's Steve Andrews.

The project, which is being carried out in conjunction with Intel, will begin in communities where a certain level of hot-spot coverage is already in place and will be expanded.

Andrews said negotiations with cities beyond the original 12 that are interested in taking part in the second phase of the project are under way.
