NTT seen undertaking major reform plan

September 23, 2005

NTT will be undergoing a major restructuring effort to cut costs and boost efficiency, a Japanese daily said Friday.

Financial newspaper Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported on its front page that Japan's biggest telecommunications group should be consolidating operations in its fixed phone line, Internet and network systems.

The Nikkei said that the fixed phone lines will eliminate the differences in long-distance and regional operations.

If the plan goes through, it will be the biggest overhaul of the company since 1999. The Nikkei said an official announcement is expected in November, and the plan should be in place by 2007.
