In Brief: .eu fast becoming popular domain name

May 23, 2006

Internet domain names ending with .eu are becoming one of the most popular in the world, according to the European Registry of Internet Domain Names.

The group was tasked by the European Union from April to make it possible for groups and individuals to register a Web site name ending with .eu to indicate that they are of the European Union.

Since .eu opened for general registration on April 7 more than 1.8 million sites now have that ending, with Germany having the highest number of registrants, followed by Britain, while the Netherlands came in third place, EURid said.

The group also said that .eu is now the eighth most popular domain name ending in the world.
