In Brief: Sun Microsystems to shed up to 5,000 jobs

June 1, 2006

U.S. computer server company Sun Microsystems said Wednesday it would cut between 4,000 and 5,000 jobs and close two California complexes.

The Silicon Valley stunner was announced as part of an overall growth plan that emphasizes bolstering products such as Java, Solaris and StorageTek while consolidating its real-estate holdings and reducing staff by 11 percent to 13 percent.

Sun has been laboring to overcome five consecutive losing years and is expected to report more red ink this summer.

The job cuts are expected to result in cost savings of nearly $600 million by 2007. The retrenched company will operate out of campuses at Menlo Park and Santa Clara.

Chief Executive Officer Jonathan Schwartz said Sun was simplifying its business plan "and focusing our energies on the automation, energy efficiency and network innovation at the heart of our technology leadership."
