Toshiba Monday announced the largest commercially available 2.5-inch hard drive for laptop computers.

The 200 Gigabyte device uses Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR) technology that the company said in a news release would lead to laptops that can do virtually anything a large desktop PC can do.

Toshiba Vice President Scott Mccabe said the hard drive will appeal to high-end computer manufacturers.

"We've listened to our customers' needs for high-capacity storage in a small form factor to enable the advanced multimedia applications and enriched usage experience that consumers are demanding today," said Maccabe, vice president and general manager, Toshiba SDD. "Our technology innovation in PMR has laid the foundation for delivering the industry's highest capacity and areal density in the standard mobile drive form factor."

The dual-platter MK2035GSS weighs a paltry 98 grams. It will be formally unveiled at this week's Computex show in Taiwan and will enter full production in August.
