In Brief: WiMax demand expected to surge

WiMax, or worldwide interoperability for microwave access, will become increasingly popular especially when it becomes more mobile, a research group said.

According to London-based Juniper research, mobile WiMax subscription that will allow high-speed broadband access on the go will likely increase to 1.7 million by 2007 and surge to 21.4 million by 2012.

Mobile WiMax, in short, is "a key part of the personal broadband infrastructure," Juniper said, adding that third-generation technology has already led to a rise in demand for mobile Internet as well as mobile gaming and mobile television.
