In Brief: U.K. to release wireless spectrum in '07

June 29, 2006

British regulators Thursday published a proposal for the auction of new wireless spectrum in 2007.

Ofcom said it planned to auction 12 licenses at 10 gigahertz, 28 GHz and 32 GHz for use in nationwide and local wireless services, including broadband.

The licenses break down to a single nationwide 10 GHz license that will be used by broadcasters in time for the 2012 London Olympics; two national and three regional 28 GHz licenses, and six U.K.-wide 32 GHz licenses.

The auction will be on a technology and application-neutral bases and is part of a larger spectrum-release program to take place over the next few years.

Ofcom will take responses to the proposal until Sept. 7.
