Over 2M .eu Internet addresses registered

July 3, 2006

Over two million Internet addresses ending with ".eu" have been registered since the domain was launched this April.

The European Registry of Internet Domain Names, or EURid, which was appointed by the European Commission to register and manage .eu domain names, said that the domain has become the third most popular in Europe.

So far, Germans have the most domains with over 631,000, followed by Britain with over 373,000, and in third place was the Netherlands.

"When we opened .eu for the public in April this year we were convinced it would prove popular, but no one anticipated these high numbers. We are pleased to see that people from all European countries have shown an interest in conveying a European identity on the Internet," said Marc Van Wesemael, managing director for EURid in a news release.
