Cingular starts 3G wireless in San Antonio
July 14, 2006Cingular Wireless launched a "super-charged" third-generation wireless network in San Antonio Friday.
The network will provide wireless broadband data service up to 700 kilobits per second and will also accommodate new-generation cell phones designed to operate at higher speeds.
"Our super-charged 3G network complements the broadband experience customers already receive at work and home by extending an 'invisible wire' throughout our service area," said Andy Shipley, Cingular's general manager in San Antonio.
The network uses HSDPA-UMTS (High Speed Downlink Packet Access-Universal Mobile Telephone System) technology and is part of a $346 million investment program for Cingular's Texas infrastructure.
The company also plans to expand its handset offering so customers can take advantage of the higher speeds.
