In Brief: Atmel develops low-cost USB demo board

France's Atmel said Wednesday it had completed an 8-bit controller for USB development projects that costs several times less than current solutions.

The new software coupled with an AT90USBKey demonstration board will be available for about $30 and connects to a PC without the need for an exclusive external power source.

Atmel explained existing development tools are based on 32-bit processors that require large memories and a separate operating system. The French company's 8-bit product doesn't need an operating system.
