Dam broken to restore Calif. wetlands
August 25, 2006
People watch as the last barrier of sand from a large berm is washed away Thursday, Aug. 24, 2006, allowing seawater to flood the Bolsa Chica wetlands for the first time in a century. The tidal flow, which will seep across 367 acres of wetlands twice a day, will restore a living habitat that will sustain plants and fish and attract more migratory birds, serving as a major wildlife sanctuary.
