Microsoft to use AMD software

Redmond, Wash., software giant Microsoft announced it would use AMD's virtualization technology for an upcoming service pack.
The company said the feature would be included in Beta 2 of Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1, BetaNews reported.

The move comes as a departure from Microsoft's policy of including support only for Intel-specific virtualization technology.

"Virtualization is a major global trend that enables businesses to be more agile. AMD and Microsoft are collaborating to make virtualization a strong part of the computing fabric," said AMD Vice President Terri Hall.

Microsoft said Beta 2 would also include a Volume Shadow Service, which allows users to make backups and edit files in a virtual hard disc without activating the virtual machine.
