Italy plans monitor high on Everest
October 4, 2006Italy plans to set up an atmospheric monitoring station on Mount Everest on the Nepal-China border, more than 24,000 feet above sea level.
Agostino Da Polenza, who is heading the project, announced it at a meeting on high-altitude test stations, the Italian news agency Ansa reported. Da Polenza heads Italy's Everest-K2 project at the National Research Council.
In February, Italy set up a monitoring station more than 15,000 feet up on Everest. That station's primary target is the Atmospheric Brown Cloud of pollution generated by factories in China and India.
The station is next to Italy's Everest Pyramid, a glass and aluminum research center.
