Group wants to push Linux into cell phones
November 14, 2005A new consortium has been launched to give Linux a greater role as an operating system for mobile phones.
The Linux Phone Standard (LiPS) Forum is made up of 10 tech companies seeking to make Linux an alternative to Windows Smartphone.
Boosters of LiPS consider their system to be more flexible as a plug-and-play mobile platform, although lacking in the raft of features that Windows and Symbian boast.
Representatives of the Forum tell CNet.com their main goal is developing a set of software standards that will make it easier to mass produce Linux-capable phones.
