Briefs: Swisscom in talks with govt on Eircom

November 30, 2005

Swisscom said Wednesday it is holding talks with the Swiss government on the possibility of buying out Eircom.

The government voted last week to prevent the Swiss phone giant from buying out its Irish counterpart. The government owns about 66 percent of total shares of Swisscom.

The company said that board members have since then been talking to federal authorities, adding that "Swisscom can be expected to inform the general public next week, at the earliest, what action it intends to take" in the future.
