Briefs: Qualcomm, Verizon team on cell-phone TV

December 2, 2005

Plans are in the works for what will be the first television network in the United States serving video-capable cell phones.

Qualcomm said Thursday that it was working with its MediaFLO subsidiary to put together a mobile television service that will debut on a segment of Verizon Wireless' network.

"Using the MediaFLO technology and network, Verizon Wireless will be able to offer its customers a real-time TV-like experience on their wireless phones unlike anything available on the market today," said Qualcomm CEO Paul Jacobs.

MediaFLO is scheduled to launch the service next year.

The service will initially be offered on about half of the Verizon CDMA2000 1xEV-DO-based broadband network. The service operates on the 700 megahertz spectrum, upon which Qualcomm has a nationwide presence.
