Briefs: Cingular launches 3G network

December 6, 2005

Cingular Wireless launched Tuesday its third-generation network in select regions in the United States.

The Broadband Connect service is currently available to about 35 million subscribers in Austin, Texas; Baltimore; Boston; Chicago; Dallas; Houston; Las Vegas; Phoenix; Portland, Ore.; Salt Lake City; San Diego; San Francisco; San Jose, Calif.; Seattle; Tacoma, Wash.; and Washington, D.C. The network should be more widely available next year, the company said in a news release.

The 3G network uses high-speed downlink packet access technology, or HSDPA, which shares a common core network with global system for mobile communication/enhanced data rates for global evolution (GSM/EDGE).
