Poll: Marriage + money = happiness

January 12th, 2007

If you're married and wealthy, you are probably very happy, a recent poll of U.S. residents found.

The Gallup poll of 1,010 adults showed respondents were satisfied with their personal lives, WebMD.com said. Those with higher incomes -- especially those who are married -- said they are very happy with their personal lives.

About 64 percent of married people said they were very satisfied with the direction of their personal life, compared to 43 percent of singles polled, the service said.

While 72 percent of respondents with incomes of at least $75,000 reported being very satisfied with their personal life, only 36 percent of those with an annual income of $30,000 or less said the same.

When combining the results of the 2006 poll with polls from 2005 and 2004, Gallup researchers said marriage may be more strongly associated with personal happiness than money. Fifty-six percent of married adults in the lowest income bracket reported being very happy, compared with 50 percent of unmarried adults in the highest bracket.

Researchers said 67 percent of married adults in the highest income group said they are very happy.

If you are selfish with money when it comes to communicating and sharing with your spouse then you have major, major issues. Money gets complicated when you%u2019re married because you might have a hard time adjusting to the %u201Chers is mine and mine is hers%u201D mentality that is required for a marrige to function financially.
Marriage is a social institution, especially here in the US. However, the divorce rate is just over 50%, and the most common reason is over money. Maybe some of these couples should have gotten payday installment loans, or some counseling. Finances are oft the most common reason, not clashing over children, not abuse or infidelity, but over money. Perhaps it would beneficial if as soon as a marriage license is granted, the couples are shipped off to a mandatory money management course for a weekend. One of the keys to marriage, and indeed any relationship, is compromise, and equally important are the concepts of teamwork and also of communication. You have to be able to work with your partner, meet on common ground, be able to tell them everything, and be able to relay what you are thinking or feeling. Communication is good for both of you. This is especially true about your financial situation. Communication, especially about finances, is paramount to proper money management for couples. Had so many other people listened to this, they may not have had to go to divorce court. Now, no one ever said it is or was ever going to be easy; you will have your ups and downs. Just remember that if you hit a snag in your family%u2019s budget, payday installment loans may be the trick to saving your budget. Even in your marriage.
