Gateway Offers AMD Processors in New Server

Gateway is jumping back into the server arena with a new tower system that will sport either dual- or single-core Advanced Micro Devices processors.

The company's E-9232T server tower, which officially rolled out on March 15, can use either an AMD dual-core Opteron 1000 series processor or a single-core Athlon 64 3500+ chip. Gateway first started offering Opteron-based servers in November.

In the last six months, the Irvine, Calif.-based company, which is better know for its line of laptops and desktops, has re-entered the server market with several offerings geared toward SMBs (small and midsize businesses) and specific vertical markets, such as government and education.

In September, Gateway launched three new servers based on Intel's dual-core processors. The company was also one of the first hardware vendors to offer systems based on Intel's quad-core processors.

The company has also been pursuing companies hungry for more storage hardware, and on March 1 the company unveiled five new network-attached storage rack-mounted devices.

As the company has with some of its other servers, Gateway is offering the E-9232T server with its Lights Out system management features. This allows users to remotely shut down or restart servers though a Web browser and a Web-based dashboard.

Gateway is also offering a remote control KVM (keyboard, video and mouse) product, which allows customers to remotely control the server. The new server will also have features such as integrated RAID support and hot-swappable redundant power supplies.

The new system supports a SATA II (serial ATA) drive and comes with four, 3.5-inch hard disk drives that offer customers up to 3TB of storage capacity. The server also offers DDR2 (double-data rate) ECC memory with four sockets that provide up to 8GB of RAM.

The server supports either one single-core Athlon 64 3500+ processor, which runs at 2.2GHz. It can also support one of several Opteron 1000 series processors, including the Opteron 1210, 1212 and the 1216 models. The clock speeds on these processors range from 1.8GHz to 2.4GHz.

The systems also supports the Nvidia MCP55 Pro chip set.

The E-9232T server is immediately available from Gateway. The starting price for a system with the single-core AMD processor starts at $699, and a server with a dual-core Opteron processor starts at $999, the company said.
