Briefs: Taiwan considers lower telecom charges

December 27, 2005

Taiwan's telecom and Internet charges could become lower under changes being considered by government regulators.

The China Post said Tuesday that the Directorate General of Telecommunications stated that the method of calculating consumer rates could be updated in a way that would open the door to cuts in customer bills.

The original rates were established a few years ago when Taiwan's telecom industry was being liberalized. It is now due for an overhaul in order to bring consumer rates on the island in line with the rest of Asia.

The DGT said the recalculation would be based on factors including annual sales and earnings of Taiwan's various telecom operators during the past five years.
