Teens to help dig up mastodon bones
April 4, 2007High school students are being recruited by Chicago's Field Museum to help excavate a mastodon discovered in Wayne, Ill.
A group of 30 students and 10 teachers from Chicago and the surrounding suburbs will participate in a two-week "Mastodon Camp" under the supervision of the museum and the DuPage County Forest Preserve District, the Chicago Tribune reported.
Mastodon molars and some pieces of its tusk and rib were discovered in 2005 in Pratt's Wayne Woods Forest Preserve.
"Whether or not there are other animals, or other remains, that remains to be seen," Richard Kissel, a paleontologist in the Field Museum's education department, told the Tribune. "We really don't know at this point. That's part of the fun: to dig in and find out exactly what we come up with."
