New telecom cable links Europe, SE Asia

January 3rd, 2006

Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Azia Monday presided over the dedication of a new undersea telecom cable linking Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

The SEA-ME-WE 4 cable stretches from France to Singapore and carries nearly 1.3 terabits per second of data that is the equivalent of 15 million simultaneous phone calls.

Azia told the audience in Karachi that the new capabilities offered a boost to regional businesses and to Internet service providers along the cable's path.

Pakistan in particular benefits from a second international cable that will provide redundancy in the event of an outage on the SEA-ME-WE 3 cable.
