Emirates to foster telecom advances

January 3, 2006

The United Arab Emirates is gearing its telecommunications strategy toward the expansion and improvement of services.

The UAE's Supreme Committee for the Supervision of the Telecom Sector announced Tuesday that with the country's telecom and Internet penetration already at high levels, the goal through the rest of the decade would be to offer higher-quality services and develop the UAE's communications research capabilities.

In addition, the committee said in a brief statement Tuesday that it sees the UAE becoming a telecom and IT hub for the Gulf region.

"UAE has the right environment and the necessary potentials in its telecom sector that makes it an ideal place for the launch of development projects in the field of IT and telecommunications," said Committee Chairman H.E. Sultan Al-Mansoori.

Details of any specific changes in the telecom rule book were not immediately revealed; however, the committee assured there would be regular reviews of the regulatory regime.
