Cleaner gas among proposals
April 22, 2007Proposals to reduce greenhouse gases suggested this week by California regulators include buying cleaner gas and using more efficient light bulbs.
The initial list of environmentally friendly changes from the Air Resources Board included those that could be implemented by 2010. The listalso included a statewide ban on a chemical typically used to clean air conditioners, the San Francisco Chronicle said Saturday.
The proposals from the board focused primarily on pushing for added efficiency in products such as gasoline, light bulbs, concrete and even replacement tires for automobiles.
Environment California official Jason Barbose criticized the list of changes, saying it represents a delayed approach to fighting the greenhouse gas problem.
"Both in terms of meeting the early goals and of broadly solving the problem, the state needs to be putting the pedal to the metal," he said. "This isn't quite doing that."
The list, that resulted from Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's signing of the environmental AB32 law last year, will now be reviewed Monday in Sacramento, the newspaper said.
