Microsoft (?) Site Hacked

May 1, 2007 Microsoft (?) Site Hacked

Beware: Partner sites may not reach your own security standards, as Microsoft recently learned.

According to the Internet Storm Center at the SANS Institute a Microsoft Web site was defaced recently. But the hack wasn't what it seemed.

The page was on the site ieak.microsoft.com where users could select a distribution license for the Internet Explorer Administration Kit.

It currently redirects you to the company home page. The defacement displayed the words "Own3d by Cyber-Terrorist" and an image (now offline) of the picture of Bill Gates getting pied in the face several years ago.

What is interesting and instructive is that the site was not actually on the Microsoft Web network, but on a hosting partner, and developed by yet another party. One of the great things about the Web is the ability to make Web pages anywhere look local or be part of your site, but you're also bringing all that goes with your partners into your customers' experience.
