Briefs: India telecom major seeks China stake

January 11, 2006

India's state-owned telecom MTNL is reportedly about to acquire equity in a Chinese telecom as part of its overall expansion strategy.

The identity of the Chinese company had not been revealed; however, the Hindu Business Line reported that it was set to launch third-generation telecommunications service in a potential market covering four Chinese provinces.

The report also noted that the Chinese company was involved in Time Division Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access technology, which was developed in China.

If the deal pans out, it will be the first equity investment by an Indian company in the booming but heavily regulated Chinese telecom sector.

MTNL (Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd.) has publicly stated it is seeking revenue opportunities outside India and is actively scouting the African telecom market.
