UPI Poll: Chinese space program a threat

May 28, 2007 Chinese space exploration exhibition

More than 60 percent of respondents to a UPI-Zogby International polled said the Chinese space program represents a threat to U.S. security.

With 22 percent of participants strongly agreeing and 41.8 percent somewhat agreeing with the statement that the Chinese space program presents a threat to American security, there is an obvious concern about the program.

China is one of three nations to have launched manned spacecraft. Last year, Chinese officials set out a manned-flight plan for both lunar and Mars exploration. The China's space program has also proven satellite and military applications.

A total of 28.9 percent -- 23.6 percent somewhat disagreeing and 5.3 percent strongly disagreeing -- of those asked disagree that China's space program is a threat to the United States.

The Zogby interactive poll of 5,141 U.S. residents was carried out May 16-18 and has a margin of error of 1.4 percentage points.
