Shark Bite Leads to Reproduction Mystery
June 25th, 2007 in Biology /
Veterinarian Bob George for the Virginia Aquarium in Virginia Beach, Va., is shown standing in the turtle exhibit at the museum on Wednesday, June 20, 2007. George discovered that a female Black Tip Shark in the museums shark was pregnant. The fact no other male Black Tip was in the tank makes the possibility of asexual reproduction a real possibility. Test are being performed to determine if the genetic signature is identical to that of the mothers. If so, it was asexual reproduction. (AP Photo/Gary C. Knapp)
(AP) -- Veterinarian Bob George sliced open the dead shark and saw the outline of a fish. No surprise there, since sharks digest their food slowly.
