Scientists launch vast observatory to solve cosmic mysteries

One of the 1600 cosmic particles detectors to be deployed by the Pierre Auger Observatory (PAO) close to the Andes mountain range is seen in Mendoza, Argentina in 2005. Scientists in western Argentina were set to inaugurate on Friday the world's largest astronomical observatory, hoping to unlock the mysteries of high energy cosmic rays that bombard the Earth.
