American Chemical Society Webinar focuses on protecting intellectual property

News media and others interested in the chemical sciences are invited to join the next in a series of American Chemical Society (ACS) Webinars™, focusing on protecting intellectual property.

Scheduled for Thursday, July 1, from 2 - 3 p.m. EDT, the free ACS Webinar™ will feature Tom Steinberg, a patent attorney with Roberts, Mlotkowski, Safran & Cole in McLean, Va., speaking on From Laboratory to Licensing: Protecting Your Intellectual Property Along the Way.

ACS Webinars™ connect you with subject experts and global thought leaders in chemical sciences, management and business to address current topics of interest to scientific and engineering professionals. Each webinar includes a short presentation followed by a Q & A session.

News media and scientists can tune into the conference without charge, but must register in advance.

Steinberg's topics will include:


  • Secure your innovations -- avoiding costly mistakes that scientists make
  • Laboratory documentation requirements to secure your patent priority rights
  • Overview of the patenting process, including drafting of the application, filing decisions, prosecution issues before the Patent and Trademark Office, and patent issuance
  • The value of a patent including: exclusion of competitors, freedom-to-operate and licensing

A patent attorney with more than 19 years experience, Steinberg has focused primarily on chemical and mechanical practice areas. He has prepared and prosecuted numerous United States' and international patent applications, and has extensive experience in providing freedom-to-operate and validity opinions, technology licensing and transfer, negotiating and drafting joint development agreements and conducting intellectual property due diligence analysis for acquisitions and divestitures. Steinberg began his career in patent law as a patent examiner at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and has subsequently held positions at Mobil Oil Corp. and DuPont, and is licensed to practice law in Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C. and Virginia, and is admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
