Engineering education society names NJIT professor Fellow

Ronald H. Rockland, PhD, chair of NJIT's Department of Engineering Technology, has been named a Fellow of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). Rockland, of Parsippany, will receive the designation at the ASEE Annual Conference this coming June in Canada.

Rockland's career began in 1970 when he established the biomedical engineering department at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. Since then he has accumulated almost 25 years of industrial experience in research, engineering, marketing and sales management and general management with several high technology corporations in the medical device and scientific instrumentation areas. Before joining NJIT in 1995, he was an adjunct marketing professor with County College of Morris and Bergen Community College.

At NJIT, Rockland holds a joint appointment in biomedical engineering and engineering technology plus a Master Teacher designation. From 2002 to 2008, he was associate dean for NJIT's Newark College of Engineering. He has over 50 conference and journal publications in the area of engineering outreach to the K-12 community and biomedical research and holds five patents in the biomedical area. He is a past recipient of the NJIT Excellence in Teaching Award and the NJIT Excellence in Service Award.

Rockland received the F.J. Berger Teaching Award in 2004 and has served in many ASEE positions including chair, engineering technology division; director, engineering technology council; general conference chair for the 2002 ASEE Conference for Industry and Education Collaboration and vice chair for programs, engineering technology. He has also been with the Technology Accreditation Commission (TAC) for the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) since 1998, initially as a program evaluator and recently as a TAC commissioner. He has served as a member of the ABET Biomedical Accreditation Activities Committee.

Rockland received his BSEE and MSEE in electrical engineering and a PhD in bioengineering and electrical engineering from New York University. He also received a MBA in marketing from the University of St. Thomas (St. Paul, MN).
