Stan Powell to receive 2009 AIAA Ground Testing Award

The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) is pleased to announce that Stan Powell of the Aerospace Testing Alliance, Arnold Air Force Base, Tenn., has won the 2009 AIAA Ground Testing Award.

Dr. Powell will receive the award in Denver on August 5, at an awards luncheon held in conjunction with the 45th AIAA/ASME/SAE/ASEE Joint Propulsion Conference & Exhibit and the 7th International Energy Conversion Engineering Conference, which are being held August 2-5 at the Colorado Convention Center, Denver, Colo.

The award citation declares that "Dr. Powell's original research and ability to bring together the computational and experimental have served the ground test community for over twenty-five years" and that he is "a unique asset in the ground test community." The award recognizes Dr. Powell's extensive original research and engineering development leading to the modeling, design, and operation of hypersonic test facilities, and the support of customers using those facilities. It also honors Powell's extensive contributions in thermophysics research, including original modeling of combustion processes, modeling of thermodynamic and transport properties of test media, and assessment of combustion effects on test data with respect to simulation fidelity.

An AIAA Associate Fellow, Dr. Powell is a past recipient of a 2006 AIAA Harry Staubs Precollege Outreach Award, and a 2004 AIAA Sustained Service Award.

The AIAA Ground Testing Award is presented to recognize outstanding achievement in the development or effective utilization of technology, procedures, facilities, or modeling techniques for flight simulation, space simulation, propulsion testing, aerodynamic testing, or other ground testing associated with aeronautics and astronautics.
