Chief of naval research to speak at robotics conference

The chief of naval research will speak about autonomy and other robotics challenges and opportunities during a presentation at the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International's (AUVSI) Unmanned Systems Program Review 2012 on Feb. 9.

Rear Adm. Matthew Klunder, who heads the Office of Naval Research (ONR), will give his remarks at 9 a.m. at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C. After updating conference attendees about ongoing science and technology efforts, Klunder will discuss opportunities for academia and industry to engage in various programs.

"The Department of the Navy is striving to place a greater emphasis on robotic systems to provide our future fleet and force the most cost-effective technology solutions possible," Klunder said. "ONR is working on a number of initiatives to advance autonomy and data-sharing tools to give our Sailors and Marines the edge they need on their missions."

The presentation is part of AUVSI's maritime systems day.
